9/3/08

Adam Wainwright

Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright pitched well for the third straight start since coming off the DL on Tuesday at Arizona. He allowed one run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking two to pick up the victory. Wainwright hasn't gone more than six innings in any of his three starts since returning from a sprained middle finger on his right hand. He has a 2.08 ERA during that stretch, though, and again looks like a must-start in all leagues. His next start is scheduled for Monday against the Cubs.

Clayton Kershaw-WOW, Did not think he would be back in the Majors.

James Shields

James Shields got his 12th victory of the year while pitching 7 innings of 6-hit, 1-run ball. The lone score against him came in the in the 6th inning when Brian Roberts lead off with a single and finally scored on Kevin Millar's fielders choice grounder to third. That was the only run to be scored against Shields all day. In the effort, Shields picked up only 1 strikeout on the day.

Shields matched his career high in wins on Sunday during his 79th career start. His 2.41 ERA is second to Cliff Lee in homer ERA in 2008, and is ranked 4th in the majors this year. Shields has now won 7 out of his 9th starts at home, and for his short career, Shields is 20-8, with a 3.19 ERA in 49 home starts. Shields is also throwing 14 pitches per inning, ranked 5th fewest in the AL.
Let's put Shields year so far in prospective with his current AL rankings: He is ranked 5th in innings pitched this season with 184.2 innings. Shields is also 6th in strikeout/walks ratio, and 8th in walks/9 innings in the AL.

Well all, this week I am playing the Drunken Tigers in a great battle of two teams fighting for the Playoffs. This week will be a great match up to see who made out in the trade. The match up with have both squads having 7 starts for there pitchers. He will have Javier Vazquez,Dice K,Chad Billingsley(twice), Scott Baker(twice),and King Felix. I will have Randy Johnson,Franciso Liriano(twice),Tim Lincecum,Adam Wainwright,Scott Kazmir and Clayton Kershaw. Friday Night Under the Lights

CC Sabathia against Washington is my Start of the Night.CC and the Brewers should have no problem mowing down the Washington Nationals, they are the worst Hitting team in baseball. Sabathia improved to 5-0 as a Brewer, with 8.1 strong innings against Atlanta on Saturday afternoon. He will be looking for six straight win, Sabathia continues to be extremely effective for Milwaukee and fantasy owners by going deep into games lowers that whip and era.

Friday, best day for Baseball

Pitchers
Josh Beckett- At Yankee Stadium and battling for first place this should be a great game to watch. Beckett has been 4-2 over his last eight starts, Boston fans hope he can continue that winning way tonight.

Manny Parra-He has a low-to-mid-90's fastball and very good command of all of his pitches. Brewers will be taking on Houston at home where Parra has been light out, he is considered there Number 3 behind CC and Big Ben.

Dan Haren-Haren has given up two or fewer runs in the last eight of nine starts and will be face the Giants on the road. He has struck out 59, walked 13 and posted a 1.29 ERA in the last 63 innings.

Joe Saunders- Tonight he will be facing the Baltimore Orioles, he enters tonight's games with a record of 12-5 and era of 3.05 . He is on a Angels team that going to take the West without a problem.

Gavin Floyd-Floyd lasted only 2.2 innings, allowing six earned runs and seven walks in his last outing. He will get Detroit tonight who has been pounding the ball lately, and Minnesota next after that. I would look to sell high on Floyd at this time.

Ryan Demptster- At home against Florida, he is 10-0 at home. Demptster is coming off a great road victory in his last start. Lets hope it continues tonight.

7/23/08

A Couple Pitchers to Watch

John Lackey- Every year there is a guy who is just low on the radar. Well this season its John Lackey. Angels are doing really well out in the West and he is not gettting alot of credit. He is 7-2 this season with a era of 2.58 and his whip is 1.2. He is a must start in every league, tonight he will get the Clevland Indians at home.

Tim Hudson-He will be on road tonight against Florida.

Clay Bucholz- Lester and Dice-K have been mowing down Mariners, lets see if the rookie can get back on track.

Ted Lilly-Since April he has posted a 3.99 era, but has looked good in his last start, striking out six and only allowing one run over 7 innings. He is on the road against Arizona tonight and if the games go anything like the last two nights he will need to have his A game to have a quality start.

CC Sabathia- Sabathia has won all three starts for the Brewers. The only concern is that he threw 110 pitches Friday night, after throwing 122 pitches in a complete game win over the Reds Sunday. Sabathia is really in a groove, but if he continues to throw this many pitches, will it take a toll on him in September?

7/22/08

Randy Johnson

Last night in the STRAIGHT UP REDIC LEAGUE, I took a huge gamble and it paid off. Picking up Randy Johnson the 44 year old left-hander from the Arizona Diamondbacks who entered the game with a 1.98 career ERA and 10-0 against Chicago. Going into the game I thought if he gets seven strikeouts and only lets up a couple of runs this is an OK start . It was a pitchers duel last night in Arizona, the Cubs Rich Harden looked great as well, striking out ten and only allowing 1 earned run through 8 innings. Not as good as the Big Unit, striking out four, only walking one batter and allowing no earned runs. The Unit Lasted 7 strong innings. In the top of the 8th inning the Diamondbacks brought Micah Owings out of the bullpen. For Owings owners, this is the end for him as a starting pitcher and look forward to Max Schererz being called up as soon as he is healthy. The Unit ended up with the win making that his 291st win of his career. His next start is Sunday against the SF Giants at home. This should be a good match up for the Unit as well.

Tuesdays Starters

Barry Zito- We all know about the 126 million dollars he is set to make over the next seven years, but he is playing the Nationals who has one of the worst lineups in baseball. Maybe this is the break out start this guy needs to get back on track

Jason Marquis-If it was anything like last night game should be another great pitchers duel. Between the Cubs and the Diamondbacks. A must start in any league.

Kenny Rogers-Detroit is starting to turn things around with run support behind him, Kenny should be one of those spot starts that you get a win out of on Tuesday.

Daisuke Matsuzaka- He should have a good outing against those struggling Mariners.

Johan Santana-He gets Philly at home. Even thought Johan has not had the stuff he normal give us fantasy owners, he still is a top starter and is a person who should be in your lineup every start.

The Blog is out

Looking Ahead to Monday

Ervin Santana- Big Erv going for his 12th win of the season at home against the Cleveland Indians. Should be a great start for Santana.

Scott Kazmir- With the start being Pushed back this week Fantasy owners will get two starts out of Kazmir. Rays are at home, when they are at home they are 38-15.

Homer Bailey-At home against the Padres. Can he come out and be the pitcher we know he can be.

Rich Harden- This will be his second start as a Cub against the Arizona Diamondbacks who are 28-20 at home and will have Randy Johnson on the mound. He had 10 k last time out but did not get the win but looked solid.

Jon Lester- Red Sox are just bad on the road 21-32. But against Seattle I think Lester should have a quality start.

Sunday Pitchers

Pitchers

Jered Weaver-Against Boston I would stay away from Weaver he has been up and down all season long. His record is 8-8 and his era is above four and again the Red Sox are looking to win the series in the West.

Brandon Webb-SOLID SOLID SOLID

J0-Jo Reyes-He looked great against the Jays but that's the problem he looks good one game and only last 2.1 innings the next

Tim Wakefield- Knuckle-baller with great control. I love Tim every time out but can he keep control against the power hitting Angels

Johns Danks-He has come along so well this season. I think he continue with his first half success against the Royals

Ryan Dempster- Has not won on the road. Is 10-0 at Wrigley and will be at Houston on Sunday

Edinson Volquez-First start since the All-Star break against the New York Mets. Look out this should be the best game of the day. Pelfrey vs Volquez

Cliff Lee-After that great All-Star appearance Tuesday night, Lee is a must start in any league.

Justin Verlander-Same thing I said last Sunday these are must win games for Detroit. Verlander needs to make it at least into the seventh for the Tigers to win this game.

Derek Lowe-Lets hope the rest changes Mr Lowe he has be awful in the first half. With a record of 7-8 and letting up 19 homers with a ERA almost at 4. Can it get better PLEASE!!!

Manny Parra-If he was not Pitching against Tim Lincucum I would love this start.

Scott Baker-Minnesota has been on a run its because of the great young pitchers.

Andy Pettitte-I just traded Mike Lowell for this guy in my ESPN League. I need a Win

Justin Dushsherer- A's got a gem with this kid.

Cole Hamels- Who knows with this guy! At the beginning of the season, he was said to have dead arm and week after week he continues to strike guys out.

Rivera Blows It!

Something we do not hear very often is that Mariano Rivera has blown a game. This afternoon at Yankee Stadium that actually happened . The Yankees brought in their best closer in the game, they thought, tied 2-2 with the Oakland A's. Today shows you that Rivera is a pitcher who can be hit. With one inning pitched and a total of 23 pitches he allowed 2 hits and 1 earned run. For Fantasy owners, that is a killer day. His ERA in a yahoo league is at nine and his whip at two, the only good thing that Rivera did for your stats is he struck out three batters. The Yankees tied the game up in the bottom of the ninth with a single from Wilson Betemit that scored Robinson Cano who had doubled to start the inning. For owners of Rivera, do not worry about him he will get his saves. Come on! He plays for the New York Yankees, the luckiest team in Baseball.

Hamilton Looks to Give Back

Josh Hamilton this season is on pace to have over 150 RBI's in his second full season as a Major League Baseball player. He will be in the Home Run Derby Monday night and has been voted to start in his first All-Star Game on Tuesday in New York. He has had a long road to get to this point we all know this. But what we do not know is that Hamilton has help along the way from alot of people. But the person that Hamilton will thank on Monday long time coach and friend Clay Council from North Carolina American Legion. He is 71 years old and will pitch to Hamilton in the Home Run Derby. Council would throw batting practice to Hamilton as a teenager back in North Carolina. Hamilton this season has hit 21 home runs this season and is a favorite to win the Home Run Derby.

Homer Bailey Looks Good Finally

Well I have been very hard on Homer Bailey this season. Today against the the Milwaukee Brewers he had control of the game from the get go. He was working the outside and inside corners like everyone knew he could. Some things I should remember about Homer Bailey are that today will be his 13th start as a major league pitcher and he is only 22 years old. Through six and half innings Bailey has looked like a strong pitcher, striking out 4 and walking no one. The only problem for Bailey was that CC hit a nice homer run off of the young right-hander in third inning after having him down 0-2 in the count. The bullpen blew the win for Bailey in the bottom of the sixth. Bailey was using his fastball very well not just trying to whip it up there as hard as he can but using his mechanics to allow the ball to glide over the plate in the lower 90's. Where before he was just throwing the ball as hard as he could over the plate trying to strike guys out. Being down in the minors this last time must have taught him how to be patient with his pitches.

Sunday Pitchers

Pitchers

Justin Verlander-This is a game everyone should watch. Tigers need a good start out of Verlander.

Joe Saunders-Will miss his start with the birth of his child.

Brandon Webb- Enough though he is playing in Philly, this guy is a must start every time.

Dice-K- Lets hope he can have a quality start against Baltimore.

Ryan Dempster-We know the Cubs can score runs and this guy can pitch its the bullpen that I worry about. Without the National League save leader out with blisters the cubs will have to depend on the starters to get the job done.

Daniel Cabrera- He has shown at times that he is a good pitcher but against the Red Sox, I would not touch him with ten foot pole.

Homer Bailey- He got called up for the third time to get a spot start for the injured Aaron Harang.

Andrew Miller-Held the Mariners to just one run over seven innings. He is starting to settle in as a good young pitcher.

Chad Billingsley-Against the Marlins at home, we can hope that the run support is there again, like on Tuesday night. Billingsley got the win but need 108 pitches and only 5 innings to do it. Not one of his better starts of the season.

CC Sabathia- This will be his second start as a Brewers. He will be facing the Reds for the first time he did not see them this season in inter-league play.

Nick Blackburn- The Twins have been on a role as of late. Nick faced the Red Sox on Tuesday another hard hitting team like Detriot. If he can pitch like that against the Tigers, they will be going into the All-Star Break on a low note. But like on Tuesday we will have to watch and see if the bullpen can hold up.

Cole Hamels-He is solid and the Diamondbacks might have won yesterday but as of late they are not batting to well.

Tim Lincecum-First the Mets and now the Cubs. For this two-start pitcher it could not be the worst week to start him. He is on a team that you never know what you are going to get with run support. Also Cubs are the best team in baseball.

Scott Kazmir-Lets hope he comes and pitches like a All-Star so that the Rays can avoid the sweep against the Indians.

Wood out until at least after All-Star Break

The cubs today had there first Kerry Wood set back of the season, he was not available to pitch today in the extra inning battle against the Giants. He has blisters on his throwing finger. Wood pitched the ninth inning Friday for his 24th save in the Cubs' 3-1 win over the Giants. But after the game the Cubs staff learned of the the blisters. Wood will not be available for tomorrows final game against the Giants. He will go to the All-Star game for the first time since 2003, but according to the Cubs managers Lou Piniella who will be one of the coaches of the National League. He will not play, they will not take any chance. For owners who have him in weekly leagues might want to look for a back up in case the Cubs decide to rest him during this short week.

Harden Shows Up at Wrigley but bullpen takes his Win!

Todays Game went 11 innings with the Cubs winning 8-7. For Rich Harden owners it was a great day. For the rest of the Chicago pitching staff I cannot say the same. The Bullpen giving up 7 runs after Harden had held the Giants to zero earned through his 5 innings. Lets hope for Cubs fans that the bullpen can get control. Rich Harden made Cubs very happy today with the trade that was made for him earlier in the week. He came out and pitched 96 pitches through 5.1 innings just enough for him to get a standing ovation from the Wrigley crowd. He also had 10 strikeouts and did not allow any runs during his Cubs debut. He looked very solid with his control and had the fastball working in the high 90's which allowed him to mow most of the Giant hitters down. What also really impressed me is that Lou Piniella did not leave Rich in too long, he stuck with what has worked for harden all season, a low pitch count and six days of rest. In June when Harden pitched on six days rest he was the best pitcher in baseball. We all know that Harden is a dominant pitcher when he is healthy and the Cubs are hoping to that the 2008 season will be the season that Harden stays on the field.

Made A Trade

Today is a big day for me in Fantasy Baseball. I pulled off a blockbuster trade.
Dice K for Prince Fielder straight up!
Jason Giambi for Gary Sheffield straight up as well.

The trade now gives me depth at 1b and does not really hurt in the pitching Category, having Tim Hudson and Adam Wainwright on my bench.

Let hope that Prince can pick up the pace a little in the second half and give me those big power number.

Saturday Pitchers

Randy Johnson- In is last outing he had 10k a era of 1.40 and a whip of 0.47.

Tim Wakefield- Knuckle baller with a great supporting cast. At home against Baltimore. Enough Said.

John Danks-This is why the White Sox are winning. Great young pitchers

Edinson Volquez- This will be a test tonight against the Brewers

Ricky Nolasco- ON FIRE

Gil Meche-Problem the only time you will see this guy on the list. But the Royal have been playing well lately and they are at home against the Mariners.

Hiroki Kurdo- Last time out a 1 hitter. Lets see if he can do it again.

Joba Chamberlain- A challenging series against those Jays!!!

Matt Garza-Tampa has not looked this week let hope they can pick it up for Matt.

7/6/08

The Brewers and Indians have the paper work almost finished that would send Sabathia to Milwaukee by the end of the day on Sunday, according to the SI.com. The deal is close enough to being completed that Matt LaPorta, the top prospect going to Cleveland in the trade, has been taken out of the lineup for Double-A Huntsville. Sabathia will pitch on Tuesday for Milwaukee and get one more start on Sunday before the All-Star game.

Volquez- I predict 10 strikeouts and no runs given up against this very hurt Washington Nationals

Rodriguez-He is not at home but been solid lately.

Shields-Another sweep for the red hot Rays.

Lee- Can he get the run support he needs.

Cook- This series has been a slobber knocker!

Marshall- The Cubs need this kid to perform today!

Stults- His ownership is up 14% in CBS leagues but does this mean he can pitch.

All-Star Game

The All-Star Game is coming and fantasy owners will have a real problem on there hands that week. Games will only be played on Thursday through Sunday. My Question to all of you, Should players Stats who made the All-Star Team count against that shortened weeks Stats? I think so, if you are a good owner, you drafted well and you have All Stars on your team. I think that those stats should be put into the mix, it could make or break some owners for that week. A few years ago Major League Baseball wanted to make the All-Star Game more meaningful, awarding the winner of the mid summer classic home field advantage for the World Series. Well I think as owners we should get rewarded for picking good players. Let me know what you think?

Couple Things

Just a couple things I would like to go over today. First I would like to say to Kerry Wood, GREAT JOB, Mr Wood got his 20th save of the season last night against Baltimore. Three straight batters went down on strikes, Wood looked like a closer who had been in this role his whole life. He finally has the fans, city, and the team behind him. In my league draft this season, I decided to throw out Kerry Wood for a dollar, thinking that the Cubs fans in the draft would jump on him. No one did and I ended up with Kerry Wood for a dollar. For the first couple of weeks of the season I was very upset that I had him on my team, I was convinced that he was going to explode and the cubs had placed there closing faith on a injury stricken pitcher as there closer. Well was I wrong 13 weeks into the season I still have Kerry Wood and have 20 saves to show for it. Since a blown save against Milwaukee on May 1, Wood is 12-for-13 in save chances with a 0.98 ERA and 23 strikeouts to three walks.

Next, Kyle Skipworth the young 18 year old prospect from Florida Marlins signed a 2.3 million dollar signing bonus. What makes this kid special he is a left-hander who can hit with some power and he is a catcher. He gets lot of comparisons to Twin catcher Joe Mauer. He took batting practice last night with the Marlin, he looked a little nervous up there for his first couple at bats but once he got going he was putting the ball into play according to FSN Florida .From the Interview that I saw this kid looks like he is ready to get his career started. As a fantasy player it should be at least a year before we see him behind the plate of any games.

Trade offer

I have been offered a trade in my ESPN 5x5 head to head league. I would be trading away Joe Mauer and Josh Becket and getting Johan Santana and injury stricken Milton Bradley . My outfield is pretty solid with both Uptons, Bruce, Pence, Drew, Ludwick and Luke Scott. I also have Geovany Soto as my catcher and have not been using Mauer much. But I do think that I would get a Upgrade from Beckett to Santana. I think I should make this trade. What do you think.
