Cubs and White Sox

Today is the Windy City Classic between the two best teams in Major League Baseball the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs. The White Sox have been on a roll in the past two weeks and the Cubs have the best record in baseball. Yesterday afternoon they continued making history with a exciting home run packed game. Kerry Wood also got the win which is great for fantasy owners. Today's 1pm start will be another barn burner and I look forward to the game. Being a White Sox fan I want them to win. However being from the Chicagoland area and being a baseball fan I cheer for both Chicago teams. Today's righthanders are Jose Contreras vs. Jason Marquis, both looking to stay sharp in this heated inner-city matchup. Well that's is going to be it for now. GO SOX !!!

Baseball on TV

Last night I was listening to Jeff Erikson from Rotowire.com. He was discussing the future of baseball on TV. Now this has been a hot topic in my house and with my friends for a long time. Right now Fox and Direct TV and Major League Baseball have the right to show the games. Currently MLB is working on the MLB Channel to be set up. They have not signed an agreement yet, but one is on the table. Direct TV and Comcast Cable have the rights to the Major League Baseball Package which they call MLB Extra Innings. But you cannot watch all the games as advertised and there are blackouts in some areas. For example I live in Indianapolis and the Reds, Cubs and White Sox are blacked out. On Saturdays when the Fox game is on that’s the only game you can watch, unless you buy MLB version on the Package on there website. You can watch every game that is not in your market area. Even in Vegas, the Fox game is the only game you can watch. A friend of mine Pat Wesolowski, who was in Las Vegas last week for some tire testing, was at the sports book at the MGM. He is a HUGE Tigers fan and they were the 3:55 Fox game in some areas. In Vegas the only games on the Fox channel were the Red Sox and Reds. With technology today, I think that we as fans should be able to watch any game we want with any Provider we want with no restrictions. Fantasy Sports are on the rise and fans want to be able to watch there favorite teams no matter where they live. For the last three seasons I have bought the MLB extra innings on Direct TV, because they have the multi-channel. As a fantasy owner this is the best way to watch all your fantasy players live. MLBTV.com offers something similar the baseball Mosaic which gives live updates for all of your players as they come to bat. This is a great feature! But listening to Jeff last night makes me think that with MLB having there own channel will take away from some of the games offered to us as consumers unless you get there channel. Time will tell. But for now I will stick with Direct TV.

Some News

Homer Bailey- We all know how I feel about Mr. Bailey! Well the Reds have sent he down again.
In the three starts his is 8.76 era. The reds want him to work on his pitch control and learn how to through strikes with his breaking ball. GO REDS MANAGEMENT!

Conner Jackson- Owners he got another start in LF. Outfield eligible soon enough!

Manny Parra-Unbeaten in seven starts, always an adjustment period for Major League pitchers. Looking way better in his last two starts with that Brewers lineup. He should be a starter in any NL only leagues and shallow mixed.

Jeff Clement-Should be owned in any and all formats, PICK THIS GUY UP!!!!

Johnny Cueto-First tow games 18/1 strikeout rate. Last 8 games....NOT SO MUCH.

Jason Giambi-Since may this guy has looked great if you grabbed him early it is paying off.

Chase Headley-In most leagues he is only third base eligible with Kuz at third base the Padres will be playing him in the outfield. A great two position player to pick up.

Coco Crisp-Rumor has it....Cubs are looking to deal Rich Hill and recent call up Matt Morton to the Red Sox for the speedy outfielder. Wonder how much value he has after leaving the game today, in the third inning with that nagging hand injury.

A Look Around The Diamond

Another player to be placed on the DL; who is going to be the Cardinals catcher? It will be Jason LaRue! Yadier Molina was run over by pinch runner Eric Bruntlett in the top of the ninth inning. He was charted off the field on a stretcher. Indications are he will be ok. Catchers get smacked by bats, hit by foul balls, run over by base runners and even a wild pitch here or there. With the season full of injuries it makes the catcher spot even thinner than it was. With guys like Victor Martiniez and Josh Bard on the DL and Ryan Doumit and Jorge Posada on and off the DL, I think the Catcher position is very thin. What makes it even worse for Fantasy owners is that players like J.R. Towles and Kenji Johijima who had so much potential at the start of the season are so bad. Towles has been sent down to Triple A, the Astros now have Brad Ausmus behind the plate but he should simply be picked up in NL only leagues and maybe a league that requires 2 catchers. Another disappointment is Kenji Johijima who is has just signed a 3 year 24 million dollar contract and is batting total of .226 and has 2 homeruns and could not hit his way out of a paper bag. The mariners are the worst hitting team in the AL, and have Jeff Clement down in the minors just tearing it up since May when he was sent down. But the Mariners have nowhere to play him.

For catchers like AJ Piersynski, Russell Martin, Brian McCann and Geovanny Soto who are having good seasons, there are ten teams struggling at the catcher position. San Diego had Josh Bard who was not having a bad season, got hit with the injury bug which opened the door for former cub Michael Barrlett show that he is still a good catcher.

With the draft just over we should have some hot young catchers coming up in the next couple years with guys like Buster Posey, Kyle Skipworth, Jason Casto and Brett Lawrie. All drafted in the 1st round the catcher position are starting to look up. The Catcher to look out for this season is a hot prospect from the Baltimore Orioles named Matt Wieters. He should join guys like Taylor Teagarden, Max Ramirez and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who are all on the Texas Rangers or in there farm system. There’s tons of trade bait there with that bunch. Hopefully the catcher drought will end very soon for all of us Fantasy owners.
