Its Homer Bailey Time, Again

Homer Bailey is one of three pitchers vying for the final spot in the Reds' rotation. Fellow right-handers Micah Owings and Nick Masset also are among the leading candidates for the fifth starter's job. The Reds hoped that Bailey, a former first-round draft pick, would win the job in spring training a year ago, but he struggled and the spot was never settled. The 22-year-old Bailey went 0-6 in eight starts with a 7.93 ERA. Batters hit .378 against him. A case like Micah Owings he's been a starter in the big leagues and a pretty good one and not a bad batter either. Masset was, and then went to long relief. He's trying to get a shot at what he's always wanted to do. Homer Bailey is trying to get over the hump to be a big league pitcher." The first four rotation slots are set with Aaron Harang, Bronson Arroyo, Edinson Volquez and Johnny Cueto. Owings is my pick to win the spot, but Bailey has the most upside. Masset is likely to serve as the team's swingman out of the bullpen. Consider Owings and Bailey sleepers in deeper leagues, especially NL-only and long-term keeper formats at this point. You have to love Bailey's 95-plus mph potential but I do not.

News and Notes

  • Scott Baker was named the Opening Day starter for the Twins, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. The Twins will begin the season with a rotation of Baker, Francisco Liriano, Kevin Slowey, Glen Perkins and Nick Blackburn - alternating the two lefties with the three righties.

  • Vernon Wells will be sidelined for the next month with a strained left hamstring suffered in Monday's workout. He will undergo an MRI to gain a better understanding of the injury, but Jays' GM J.P. Ricciardi said, said he's going to miss four weeks.

  • Marmol said Monday he's not going to pitch in the World Baseball Classic, and will stay with the Cubs this spring, the Cubs Web Sit reports. "I'm not going," Marmol said after his workout Monday. "I want to stay here and work with Larry [Rothschild, pitching coach] and stay with the team. It's hard to say no." I wonder if this has anything to do with Lou Piniella telling the Assoicated Press that the Closer job is up in the air between him and Kevin Gregg.

  • Orlando Hudson reports that his surgically repaired left wrist is "no issue at all", the Dodgers' official site reports. Hudson was limited to 107 games with the injury last season, but appears ready to go this year. He'll likely bat second behind Rafael Furcal, and should a certain mercurial left fielder be hitting behind him, that would certainly help Hudson offensively, particularly in the "runs" category

Mets make BIG decision in outfield!

Daniel Murphy's outfield internship is now complete. Mets manager Jerry Manuel revealed that much Sunday, saying that Murphy will be the team's regular left fielder heading into the season, rather than remain in a platoon with Fernando Tatis. More likely, the platoon will come in right, between the right-handed-hitting Tatis and the left-handed-hitting Ryan Church(who has not made it through a whole season in three years). It's something of a leap of faith, considering that Murphy has only two months of service time and 131 big league at-bats to his credit. But Murphy, 23, also owns a .313 career average and an uncommon aptitude for hitting, prompting the decision that he is ready for a full-time assignment.

Brewers Future hurting again

Mat Gamel has been sidelined during spring training due to shoulder pain and will not be throwing anytime soon, according to the team web site. Gamel ended last season early due to an elbow issue and it looks like he'll start this season with an injury. It's doubtful that he'll make the team out of spring training, but hopefully he'll be healthy enough to start at Triple-A Nashville. Gamel has been on my radar all off season. But reading more into him, looks like the 3b of the Brewers will be Bill Hall for the foreseeable future if Gamel cannot keep himself healthy. Hall has been a dependable 3b for the Brewers over the last couple of season, he could make a nice corner infielder in the late rounds.

The Minnesota Twins finally made a big move.

The Minnesota Twins finally made a big move. After sitting idle for more than four months following a season in which they lost to the White Sox in a one-game playoff for the AL Central title, the Twins agreed to terms with free-agent third baseman Joe Crede on a one-year deal on Saturday.

A source told ESPN that Crede's contract is worth $2.5 million and includes incentives that could raise the value of the deal to $7 million.

Provided Crede's back holds up, he will fill a major need for the Twins as a power-hitting third baseman who also has a great glove.

The 30-year-old Crede has had two major back surgeries in the last two seasons. He hit .248 with 17 homers and 55 RBIs last season for the White Sox. But the All-Star played sparingly in the second half because of recurring back trouble, which limited him to 47 games in 2007.
